Frequently Asked Questions
Australian hardwoods including Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, Ironbark, Tallowwood, Jarrah and Turpentine, plus Cypress Pine and treated Radiata Pine (H3). Not every species comes in every size and grade, so confirm availability before you order. See hardwood decking, or Trex composite decking for a low maintenance option.
Blackbutt, Red Ironbark, Spotted Gum and Turpentine are classified as naturally bushfire resistant. The Bushfire Attack Level for your block comes from the Australian Standard AS 3959, so check your site’s rating with your builder or certifier before you choose. Hardwood decking lists all four.
Only if you want to keep the colour. Uncoated timber weathers to a silvery grey under Australian sun, and the greying only affects the surface. To hold the natural colour, apply a penetrating oil based finish and keep it maintained as the manufacturer recommends.
That’s tannin. Timber releases tannins when rain hits it, and the stain is cosmetic only. A cleaner like Feast Watson WOOCLEAN helps lift oils and tannins from new timber.
Hardwood decking comes in 64 x 19mm, 84 x 19mm, 135 x 19mm, 136 x 22mm, 140 x 22mm, 140 x 25mm and 135 x 32mm, in Select, Standard & Better and Feature grades. Treated Radiata Pine comes in 70, 90 and 140 x 22mm. Stainless steel decking screws are available with any decking order. Details on the hardwood decking page.
